The T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide is a speedy 4G, dual-core smartphone.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide – black

The T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide is a speedy 4G, dual-core smartphone.

The upcoming MyTouch 4G Slide surfaced over the weekend, providing a clear look at the T-Mobile handset. The phone, which carries the code name of Doubleshot, has been expected to arrive in July with a dual-core processor, a 3.7-inch display, and an 8-megapixel camera.

Of course, the 4G in the name also indicates support for T-Mobile's 4G HSPA+ network. According to TmoNews, the phone runs Gingerbread (Android 2.3) and feels slightly heavier in hand than its counterpart, the G2. What's more, the source has high marks for the four-row keyboard, calling it both "amazing" and "super fast." The Genius button makes its return on the MyTouch 4G, as does the customized version of HTC's Sense UI, features that made its predecessor, the myTouch 3G Slide, a good option for first-time smartphone buyers. The keyboard has been slightly tweaked with a dedicated button for "www" and ".com" and looks to be far less confusing than what was found on the 3G Slide.
Combining all of this with the rumored specifications, we could be looking at a double shot of performance and experience. With the right price, T-Mobile's myTouch 4G could be appealing on all fronts. T-Mobile has a long history of offering handsets that aren't focused on high-end hardware so much as how the phone works. Rather than attempting to lure hard-core Android enthusiasts with cutting-edge technology, the carrier usually caters to the user who might need a little hand-holding.

T-Mobile and HTC officially took the wraps off of the new myTouch 4G Slide on Tuesday, an Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) handset. As its name implies, the myTouch 4G Slide offers support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network. We recently sat down with HTC for a preview of the phone before its launch, and the manufacturer said it spent a great deal of time tweaking the camera software so that the myTouch 4G Slide would offer the best photo performance of any phone HTC has launched. It has improved low-light performance, should have zero shutter lag, and more. We also appreciated the solid design of the myTouch 4G Slide during our demo, and liked that the keyboard was comfortable and didn’t add too much bulk to the phone when it was stored away. The phone runs HTC’s brand new Sense interface on top of a dual-core 1.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, so everything was fluid and fast, too. The myTouch 4G Slide is equipped with a 3.7-inch WVGA display, 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, has support for SWYPE, has Netflix software pre-installed, and more. T-Mobile has not announced a price just yet, but the myTouch 4G Slide will be available in July in khaki and black.

At this point, it might not be a surprise but it is still nice to know that the rumored July 27th launch date for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide is now official. A web only pre-sale will begin July 19th from The phone, available in black and khaki, will have a price tag of $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a signed two-year contract.

The T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide has some pretty impressive specs, but the real excitement here is the camera, as we have shown you. HTC says there is zero shutter lag on the 8MP shooter which offers an f/2.2 aperture. Video can be captured at 1080p and panoramic and burst shots can be made. Besides the camera, the device has a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and a 3.7 inch WVGA display. On board is HTC Sense 3.0 on top of Android 2.3. Of course, there is a side sliding landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard which explains the term "Slide" in the device's name.

Last month, T-Mobile officially announced the myTouch 4G Slide without availability and pricing. They have finally given us an update via their Facebook page:

“Mark your calendar: The T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide will be available July 27 at T-Mobile retail stores. A Web-only pre-sale at http://mytouch.t-mobile.com/4g-slidewill kick off on July 19. Offered in two colors – black and khaki – the myTouch 4G Slide will cost $199.99 with a two-year service agreement and qualifying unlimited data plan after a $50 mail-in rebate.”
T-Mobile promises that the myTouch 4G Slide will have the most advanced camera of any smartphone. The full specs include:
  • 3.7-inch touchscreen
  • 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
  • Slide-out full QWERTY keyboard
  • Sense 3.0
  • Swype
  • Android Gingerbread 2.3
  • Qik mobile video chat.
  • Genius button with Dragon Dictation from Nuance.
  • Netflix.
  • T-Mobile TV.
  • YouTube
  • T-Mobile KidZone

The AAXA L1 Laser Pico Projector is a pocket presenting powerhouse.

Aaxa Tech L1 Laser Pico Projector

Pico projectors have been around for a few years now, and the products available today are much more mature than those available in previous years. Still, as hand-held products, there is one annoyance that no LED-powered pico projector can overcome: the need for focus adjustments.  The AAXA L1 is a different kind of pico projector, using a laser light source instead of an LED. The use of a laser means the projector never has to be focused. With built-in media player software, compatibility with Microsoft Office documents, and 160MB of onboard memory, the AAXA L1 is a pocket presenting powerhouse. While the MSRP of $599 is well above that of most other pico projectors, the L1 brings a lot to the table.

Pico projectors were supposed to be the next big thing, but they haven't taken off as quickly as some might have thought. Part of the problem is that although they're tiny, they just can't produce a bright enough image to be that useful. For that reason, we had high hopes for Aaxa's L1 since it uses a laser-based light source and an LCoS imager. Yes, it costs more than your typical pico projector does, but for cutting-edge technology, you have to pay a little extra--in this case, about 40 percent more.  Nice compact design; SVGA 800x600-pixel resolution; acceptable sound from its tiny built-in speaker; supports AVI, WMV, MP3, JPEG, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files from USB thumbdrives.

To be clear, this is a first-generation laser pico projector from Aaxa--and one of the few available on the market--so presumably the technology hasn't reached its potential. Again, this isn't a bad pico projector, it's, unfortunately, just as middling as the rest of them yet it costs significantly more; you can buy a half decent laptop or an iPad for about $600 and both will produce much better image quality. On a positive note, from a features standpoint, the Aaxa has a good foundation, and the sound the projector emits from its tiny built-in speaker is acceptable for watching movies; it has a standard 3.5mm jack if you'd prefer to connect headphones or an external speaker. The company just has to find a way to improve the picture and reduce the price while making the user interface easier to use.

Advantages
Image quality. The L1 is rated at 20 lumens maximum, and our test sample measured roughly 18 lumens. In a dark room, you could project up to a 45" diagonal, though a brighter environment will limit diagonal size to 20" or less. The image has a slightly green cast to it, but no more so than other current products in this market segment. Colors are well-saturated almost to the point of oversaturation, which makes the L1 a compelling product to use for the display of data graphics. Contrast in a dark room is quite good, with shadow detail in video maintained properly. Blacks are deep in comparison to similar products.

High resolution. Compared to most other pico projectors, the L1's native SVGA resolution is a huge improvement. Many pico projectors these days are only 640x480, or VGA, resolution. Of those that are SVGA, the L1 is, by far, the smallest and most fully-featured. This greater resolution makes it easier to read text documents or Powerpoint presentations without having to zoom in. It also makes photographs appear clearer and sharper. Furthermore, since the L1 uses a laser for illumination, it is difficult to see any visible pixelation, and there is zero "screen door" effect.

Long life lamp. The laser light source has an estimated life of 30,000 hours, which is in concert with all pocket/pico projectors using laser or LED light sources. In practical terms, the light source will far outlast the expected lifespan of the product, so users will not need to be concerned about lamp replacements.

True pocket size. The L1 measures only 4" long by 2" wide by .75" deep, making it truly "pocket sized" and easily transportable. And since the L1 has an onboard media player, you won't need to haul around any bulky accessories. For large video files, the most you will require is a simple USB memory stick. The L1 comes with a 2GB USB stick, though it can read higher-capacity drives if you happen to own them.

Connectivity. The L1, being such a small projector, has a limited number of ports. Specifically, it has a USB-A connection, a 1/8" headphone jack, a power connection for the wall charger, and an A/V port. It manages to use these ports for a surprising number of connections. The USB port is used to connect the L1 to a computer, so you can load the 160MB onboard memory with media files. It is also used to connect USB flash memory, which was our preferred mode of use during testing for its combination of large capacity and small size. The A/V port connects to one of the L1's breakout cables, allowing you to use VGA, composite, or s-video connections.

The Garmin GTU10 is the best tracking device in the world.

Garmin GTU 10

There are lots of things to keep track of in today’s world – aging parents, children, company vehicles, pets and more. What if a technology existed that allowed tracking loved ones and other valued possessions with such pinpoint accuracy that they would never be lost? This revolutionary technology is available now in a device called the Garmin GTU10

Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd., recently announced the introduction of the Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracking device. This device uses satellites, in combination with the AT&T wireless network, to track objects and relay messages to a smartphone that can subsequently locate the device, along with whatever is attached to it. “The number of applications for this technology is only limited by the imagination,” said Rusty Squire, president of the Heart Rate Watch Company, a national online retailer. Squire continues, “You can track children or aging parents, and receive text alerts straight over the AT&T wireless network.”

The actual Garmin GTU 10 device is a transmitter, so unlike GPS watches for fitness, like the Garmin Forerunner 610 that only works as a receiver, these devices send location coordinates up to a satellite. The satellites then send a signal to the AT&T wireless network which sends a text update to your smartphone. GPS mapping identifies the location of the device on your smartphone. The nice thing about the Garmin GTU 10 tracking device is the ability to set up perimeter boundaries that are polygons, rather than a radius. This polygon type of boundary is far more useful because blocks and neighborhoods are generally set up in a grid, meaning that this device can use streets and blocks as boundary lines.

“For companies wishing to track vehicle fleets, baby boomers wishing to track aging parents, and young families wishing to keep a watchful eye on the children, this device has value,” says Squire. He continues, “Imagine being alerted when your child wanders off from a school field trip so that you can intervene before anything happens”. Managing life’s risks and challenges seems to be what the GTU 10 device does best.

Small, Lightweight and Affordable Tracking Device

Thanks to the Garmin GTU 10, you can keep a watch on your loved ones, pets or valuables wirelessly. This cutting edge device allows you to pinpoint their location on a map, from your computer or a compatible Smartphone. The GTU 10 is small, lightweight and waterproof. Customize settings even let you know if the device has been turned off, and if it’s time to re-charge the Li-ion battery.

Operation
Connecting is as simple as logging in to your myGarmin account, just follow the simple steps and you can easily begin tracking! Worried about Fido wandering off? The Garmin GTU 10 allows setting up to 10 geofences (a virtual boundary) online so you can receive a text message or email alert when the device enters or exits a specified area. Each unit comes with a carrying case with carabiner clip and adhesive strip so it can attach easily to pet collars, backpack or vehicle. If you have more than one GTU 10 the Garmin software will let you track all of them on a single screen and give each one a custom name of up to 60 characters. The built in rechargeable Li-ion battery lasts up to 4 weeks for even more convenience.

More Features
With the GTU 10, there are no contracts, activation or early termination fees. Garmin provides the 1st year of Standard tracking service free, which includes access to the last 10 position updates. The Standard tracking service is then $49.99 per year after the first year. As an added convenience, download the free Garmin tracker app for your mobile device so you can compare your current location to that of the GTU 10. If you have a GPS unit with Garmin’s nuLink service you can automatically route to the GTU 10. With the Deluxe tracking plan for an additional $4.99 per month you can retrieve up to 7 days of location and tracking data and unlimited points per day set at your own custom interval. The GTU 10 provides an affordable solution for added piece of mind.

The really good news is that the renewal fee for subsequent years is only $49.99 or $4.99 per month for the deluxe tracking service plan.

The GTU 10 GPS tracker is 3”x1.3”x.8” (7.6x3.3x2cm) and only weighs 1.7 oz. (48g) and it is waterproof. It comes with a pouch to attached it to a belt or dog collar and a carabiner clip. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery is included with this gps personal tracker with an estimated life of four weeks between charges. It will even notify you though the tracking service when the battery is low and needs to be recharged or when the device has been turned off.

The Garmin GTU 10 personal GPS trackers use assisted GPS location technology and uses AT&T wireless network for data delivery. The location of the device can be monitored from Garmin’s website, with your pc, mobile apps as well as compatible Garmin nüLink devices (not included) that can automatically route to the GTU 10’s location with turn-by-turn directions.

GTU 10 GPS tracker has two service programs available. The unit come with one year of Standard Tracking which provides access to 10 points of daily track history. The Standard Tracking package can be renewed at an annual rate of $49.99/year after the first year of complimentary service. If you would like a more detailed history, Garmin offers the Deluxe Tracking service plan ($4.99 per month) allowing you to access 7 days of tracking history. Each service plan includes the option to automatically renew upon expiration, and there are no early termination fees, no activation fees and no contracts. Not bad when you consider that most other trackers’ service plans range from $12 to $15 per month and many require contracts and activation fees.

The Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracker allows you to create up to 10 geofences (virtual boundaries) for your device so that when the GTI 10 GPS trackerenters or exits a geofenced area, the Garmin tracking program can send an email or text message notificationup. It’s also easy to view a track history of where your GTU 10 has been. And because there are numerous ways to use GTU 10, it’s easy to customize battery settings for optimal performance. The uses for this device are limited only by your imagination. Because it is light weight and waterproof you can use the Garmin GTU 10 to track about anything or anyone. Some uses could be:

1.      Travelers: Locate luggage and belongings so nothing gets left behind or lost.
2.      Parents: Track your children on their way to school to make sure they arrive safely.
3.      Pet owners: The Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracker can be used as GPS pet trackers to receive notifications when your pet exits a geofence so you can go track it down. Or see where your paid “dog walker” took you pet for his walk.
4.      Runners: Let friends or family track your whereabouts on your daily run, or your progress on race day.
5.      Put it in your briefcase incase you forget it somewhere.
6.      Put it in your teenager’s car to track where they went.
And the list goes on. I’m sure that Garmin’s low cost service plan is going to have an sweeping affect on the industry to the benefit of the consumer.

HOW THE SERVICE PACKAGE WORKS
GTU 10 tracking capabilities are a result of combining AT&T's  wireless network with high-sensitivity GPS. GTU 10 has a suggested retail price of $199.99, whichnationwide includes a full year of standard tracking. Each day you can use up to 10 points of daily track history and your standard tracking can be renewed at an annual rate of $49.99 after the first year of complimentary service.

For those who want a more detailed history, the Deluxe Tracking service plan ($4.99 per month) can access seven days of track history. Each service plan includes the option to automatically renew upon expiration and there are no early termination fees, no activation fees and no contracts.

The Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracking device was awarded the Editor’s Choice Award by Popular Mechanics and is certainly well worth a look if you own a smartphone and need to track something important. Dick Tracy, the futuristic cartoon character of the 1960’s, would have wanted one of these things to go with his radio watch. While the present limitations are the AT&T network in the domestic United States, which covers most everywhere, we can envision Garmin moving to expand that network to one of more global scale in the years ahead.
