Sony BDP-S580

Enjoy Full HD1080p Blu-ray Disc movies-even in 3D. Plus, connect to the Internet wirelessly out of the box, for streaming a wide variety of online entertainment, including movies, TV episodes, videos, music, and live sports from Netflix, YouTube, HuluPlus, Pandora and more with the BDP-S580 3D Blu-ray Disc player. You can also turn your iPhone, iPad or compatible Android phone into a versatile remote control with search functionality when you download the free "Media Remote" app. Add compatible Sony HomeShare network speakers for multi-room wireless audio streaming throughout your home.

ony's home entertainment products aren't always simple Blu-ray players, HDTVs or video game systems; thanks to a consistent, well-designed interface and hearty feature sets, many of the company's mid-range and high-end products are all-in-one devices. They can access online content in addition to their primary purpose, streaming video from Netflix and Youtube, playing music via Pandora, and otherwise offering plenty of bang for your entertainment buck. The Sony BDP-S580 3D Blu-ray Disc Player ($199.99 direct) stands as one of these devices, packing 3D support, a Wi-Fi radio, and plenty of online media services in its slender case. But if you're playing a lot of BD-Live discs, you'll have some long load times to contend with.

Design
The S580 is a svelte but solid deck, measuring just 1.4 by 17 by 7.8 inches (HWD) and weighing a sturdy-feeling 3.2 pounds. Its glossy black front is distinguished by a sharp lip along the bottom edge, giving the player an angular look not seen in most home theater components. The lip holds three small Play, Eject, and Stop buttons and a small power light. On the flat black surface of the panel, an LED display and a USB port sit. The back side of the player holds HDMI, component, and composite video outputs, analog stereo and optical audio outputs, and Ethernet and USB jacks.

The included 5.9-inch remote feels like a chunky, slightly cheaper-feeling version of the remotes that come with Sony Bravia HDTVs. The buttons are all a soft rubber, and while they're laid out intuitively, their flexibility and rectangular uniformity make blind remote-handling feel awkward. Expect to look down at the remote often when inputting numbers or controlling movie playback.

Like most other Sony home entertainment products, the S580 uses excellent Sony's XrossMediaBar (XMB) user interface. Audio, video, and photo media playback services are aligned in a horizontal row, with specific services (watching online video through Netflix, listening to online music through Pandora) arranged in columns that expand out from each row. It's an easy-to-learn interface that anyone with a Playstation 3 or Bravia HDTV should already be familiar with.

The S580 is chock full of features to justify its $200 price tag. The player is 3D-compatible and can access multiple online media services either through Ethernet or built-in Wi-Fi. Among other services, the S580 includes Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Pandora. Smartphone users can wirelessly control the S580 with Sony's iOS or Android media remote app, and users with Sony Network speakers can wirelessly stream music to other rooms through the player. The only feature the S580 is missing is on-board memory; if you want to access certain features, like BD-Live content, you'll need to plug in a USB drive.

Built-In Wi-Fi
Easily connect to the internet through your home's wireless broadband network thanks to built-in Wi-Fi. No need to purchase an adapter or other device, just fire it up, connect, and you'll have access to streaming content, DLNA content on your network, and more.
 3D in Full HD 1080p
Feel like you've been transported into the action. A perfect complement to any home theater, the BDP-S580 is ready for the future of home entertainment. When paired with your 3D HDTV and active shutter glasses, you'll get the ultimate at-home 3D viewing experience.
Sony's 3D Blu-ray Disc players will play 3D Blu-ray movies in Full HD 1080p, plus your collection of standard Blu-ray movies. And don't forget about those DVDs: the BDP-S580 will upscale the quality of your DVDs to near HD, for a better picture on your HDTV.

Performance
BD-Live discs made the otherwise quick S580 sluggish. In our lab tests, the player took an average of 31.7 seconds to start up with the Quick Start mode disabled, and a scant 4.2 seconds with the feature turned on. With non-BD-Live discs, the S580 took an average of 18.2 seconds from disc insertion to first video playback. With BD-Live discs, however, that wait more than quadrupled to 1 minute, 33 seconds. This is the one area where Sony's more-expensive BDP-S770 ($299.99, 3.5 stars) beats the S580, it loaded BD-Live discs at an average of 29.7 seconds. Even the otherwise-slower Toshiba BDX2700 ($229, 3 stars) loaded BD-Live discs faster at an average of 52.6 seconds.

The S580 passed our video tests with flying colors. Using the HQV Blu-ray disc, we ran the player through numerous video processing challenges, and it handled them all ably. Motion scenes showed no judder or tearing, and noise reduction softened grain without significantly affecting fine details. I tested the S580's 3D functionality with Avatar's 3D edition, and it worked flawlessly. After the extremely long load time, the Avatar Extended Collector's Edition also played very well. The S580 performed similarly well with IMAX: Under The Sea 3D and The Warriors Blu-ray Discs. As far as DVD upconversion, the S580 played The Big Lebowski capably, without much in the way of sophisticated filters or faux-HD algorithms. It looked good, but clearly DVD; you can't reasonably expect much more than that.

With tons of features, the Sony BDP-S580 3D Blu-ray Player is a top-notch home theater component with only a few flaws holding it back. It's slow to load newer BD-Live Blu-ray discs and its remote feels a bit glimsy, but its 3D support, built-in Wi-Fi, and wealth of online media services make it a solid choice. The competing S770 costs $100 more, but offers similar features, however, so the S580 stands out as the better choice if you want a 3D Sony Blu-ray player—just get ready to wait longer to see your BD-Live discs.
 Streaming Content
With the BDP-S580 Blu-ray Disc player, there's always something on. Using your home broadband internet connection, you can instantly stream a wide variety of movies, TV shows, live sports, videos and music from Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, Hulu Plus and many more. Connect to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable or via built-in Wi-Fi. Sony's I/P Noise Reduction is also on-board, helping to improve the picture quality of Internet entertainment and enjoy crisp, clear images on your HDTV--even with compressed, streaming media.
 Mobile Device Control
Turn your iPhone, iPad or compatible Android phone into a versatile remote when you download Sony's free "Media Remote" app. This gives you basic remote functions, a full QWERTY keyboard, plus the ability to search for information about the movies you're watching on YouTube, Wikipedia, and many BRAVIA Internet Video services. It also gives superior color reproduction thanks to consistent brightness across the screen.

16:9 display for best widescreen gaming and video

An aspect ratio is an expression of a video image's width compared to its height. The 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio is standard for universal to high-definition television and European digital television. A native 16:9 aspect ratio means outstanding game and video display without bars at top and bottom of the picture and without the quality loss than comes from scaling, altering an image to fit on a different screen size.

SmartContrast 1,000,000:1 for incredible rich black details

You want the LCD flat display with the highest contrast and most vibrant images. Philips advanced video processing combined with unique extreme dimming and backlight boosting technology results in vibrant images. SmartContrast will increase the contrast with excellent blacklevel and accurate rendition of dark shades and colors. It gives a bright, lifelike picture with high contrast and vibrant colors.

Fast 8ms On/off response time:Great text & graphics display

On-Off response time is the period required for a liquid crystal cell to go from active (black) to inactive (white) and back to active (black) again. It is measured in milliseconds. Faster is better: Lower response time means faster transitions and, therefore, results in fewer visible image artifacts in the display of transition of text and graphics. On-Off response time is a more important measure in the display of business content like documents, graphs and photos.

The Garmin GTU10 is the best tracking device in the world.

Garmin GTU 10

There are lots of things to keep track of in today’s world – aging parents, children, company vehicles, pets and more. What if a technology existed that allowed tracking loved ones and other valued possessions with such pinpoint accuracy that they would never be lost? This revolutionary technology is available now in a device called the Garmin GTU10

Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd., recently announced the introduction of the Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracking device. This device uses satellites, in combination with the AT&T wireless network, to track objects and relay messages to a smartphone that can subsequently locate the device, along with whatever is attached to it. “The number of applications for this technology is only limited by the imagination,” said Rusty Squire, president of the Heart Rate Watch Company, a national online retailer. Squire continues, “You can track children or aging parents, and receive text alerts straight over the AT&T wireless network.”

The actual Garmin GTU 10 device is a transmitter, so unlike GPS watches for fitness, like the Garmin Forerunner 610 that only works as a receiver, these devices send location coordinates up to a satellite. The satellites then send a signal to the AT&T wireless network which sends a text update to your smartphone. GPS mapping identifies the location of the device on your smartphone. The nice thing about the Garmin GTU 10 tracking device is the ability to set up perimeter boundaries that are polygons, rather than a radius. This polygon type of boundary is far more useful because blocks and neighborhoods are generally set up in a grid, meaning that this device can use streets and blocks as boundary lines.

“For companies wishing to track vehicle fleets, baby boomers wishing to track aging parents, and young families wishing to keep a watchful eye on the children, this device has value,” says Squire. He continues, “Imagine being alerted when your child wanders off from a school field trip so that you can intervene before anything happens”. Managing life’s risks and challenges seems to be what the GTU 10 device does best.

Small, Lightweight and Affordable Tracking Device

Thanks to the Garmin GTU 10, you can keep a watch on your loved ones, pets or valuables wirelessly. This cutting edge device allows you to pinpoint their location on a map, from your computer or a compatible Smartphone. The GTU 10 is small, lightweight and waterproof. Customize settings even let you know if the device has been turned off, and if it’s time to re-charge the Li-ion battery.

Operation
Connecting is as simple as logging in to your myGarmin account, just follow the simple steps and you can easily begin tracking! Worried about Fido wandering off? The Garmin GTU 10 allows setting up to 10 geofences (a virtual boundary) online so you can receive a text message or email alert when the device enters or exits a specified area. Each unit comes with a carrying case with carabiner clip and adhesive strip so it can attach easily to pet collars, backpack or vehicle. If you have more than one GTU 10 the Garmin software will let you track all of them on a single screen and give each one a custom name of up to 60 characters. The built in rechargeable Li-ion battery lasts up to 4 weeks for even more convenience.

More Features
With the GTU 10, there are no contracts, activation or early termination fees. Garmin provides the 1st year of Standard tracking service free, which includes access to the last 10 position updates. The Standard tracking service is then $49.99 per year after the first year. As an added convenience, download the free Garmin tracker app for your mobile device so you can compare your current location to that of the GTU 10. If you have a GPS unit with Garmin’s nuLink service you can automatically route to the GTU 10. With the Deluxe tracking plan for an additional $4.99 per month you can retrieve up to 7 days of location and tracking data and unlimited points per day set at your own custom interval. The GTU 10 provides an affordable solution for added piece of mind.

The really good news is that the renewal fee for subsequent years is only $49.99 or $4.99 per month for the deluxe tracking service plan.

The GTU 10 GPS tracker is 3”x1.3”x.8” (7.6x3.3x2cm) and only weighs 1.7 oz. (48g) and it is waterproof. It comes with a pouch to attached it to a belt or dog collar and a carabiner clip. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery is included with this gps personal tracker with an estimated life of four weeks between charges. It will even notify you though the tracking service when the battery is low and needs to be recharged or when the device has been turned off.

The Garmin GTU 10 personal GPS trackers use assisted GPS location technology and uses AT&T wireless network for data delivery. The location of the device can be monitored from Garmin’s website, with your pc, mobile apps as well as compatible Garmin nüLink devices (not included) that can automatically route to the GTU 10’s location with turn-by-turn directions.

GTU 10 GPS tracker has two service programs available. The unit come with one year of Standard Tracking which provides access to 10 points of daily track history. The Standard Tracking package can be renewed at an annual rate of $49.99/year after the first year of complimentary service. If you would like a more detailed history, Garmin offers the Deluxe Tracking service plan ($4.99 per month) allowing you to access 7 days of tracking history. Each service plan includes the option to automatically renew upon expiration, and there are no early termination fees, no activation fees and no contracts. Not bad when you consider that most other trackers’ service plans range from $12 to $15 per month and many require contracts and activation fees.

The Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracker allows you to create up to 10 geofences (virtual boundaries) for your device so that when the GTI 10 GPS trackerenters or exits a geofenced area, the Garmin tracking program can send an email or text message notificationup. It’s also easy to view a track history of where your GTU 10 has been. And because there are numerous ways to use GTU 10, it’s easy to customize battery settings for optimal performance. The uses for this device are limited only by your imagination. Because it is light weight and waterproof you can use the Garmin GTU 10 to track about anything or anyone. Some uses could be:

1.      Travelers: Locate luggage and belongings so nothing gets left behind or lost.
2.      Parents: Track your children on their way to school to make sure they arrive safely.
3.      Pet owners: The Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracker can be used as GPS pet trackers to receive notifications when your pet exits a geofence so you can go track it down. Or see where your paid “dog walker” took you pet for his walk.
4.      Runners: Let friends or family track your whereabouts on your daily run, or your progress on race day.
5.      Put it in your briefcase incase you forget it somewhere.
6.      Put it in your teenager’s car to track where they went.
And the list goes on. I’m sure that Garmin’s low cost service plan is going to have an sweeping affect on the industry to the benefit of the consumer.

HOW THE SERVICE PACKAGE WORKS
GTU 10 tracking capabilities are a result of combining AT&T's  wireless network with high-sensitivity GPS. GTU 10 has a suggested retail price of $199.99, whichnationwide includes a full year of standard tracking. Each day you can use up to 10 points of daily track history and your standard tracking can be renewed at an annual rate of $49.99 after the first year of complimentary service.

For those who want a more detailed history, the Deluxe Tracking service plan ($4.99 per month) can access seven days of track history. Each service plan includes the option to automatically renew upon expiration and there are no early termination fees, no activation fees and no contracts.

The Garmin GTU 10 GPS tracking device was awarded the Editor’s Choice Award by Popular Mechanics and is certainly well worth a look if you own a smartphone and need to track something important. Dick Tracy, the futuristic cartoon character of the 1960’s, would have wanted one of these things to go with his radio watch. While the present limitations are the AT&T network in the domestic United States, which covers most everywhere, we can envision Garmin moving to expand that network to one of more global scale in the years ahead.

Note: the information below is a general guide only. The arrangements, and the way tests are performed, may vary between different hospitals. Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or local hospital.
What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a high frequency sound that you cannot hear, but it can be emitted and detected by special machines.

ultrasound scanner
An ultrasound scan is a painless test that uses sound waves to create images of organs and structures inside your body. It is a very commonly used test. As it uses sound waves and not radiation, it is thought to be harmless.

How does ultrasound work?
Ultrasound travels freely through fluid and soft tissues. However, ultrasound is reflected back (it bounces back as 'echoes') when it hits a more solid (dense) surface. For example, the ultrasound will travel freely though blood in a heart chamber. But, when it hits a solid valve, a lot of the ultrasound echoes back. Another example is that when ultrasound travels though bile in a gallbladder it will echo back strongly if it hits a solid gallstone.

So, as ultrasound 'hits' different structures in the body of different density, it sends back echoes of varying strength.

What does an ultrasound scan involve?
You lie on a couch and an operator places a probe on your skin over the part of your body to be examined. The probe is a bit like a very thick blunt pen. Lubricating jelly is put on your skin so that the probe makes good contact with your body. The probe is connected by a wire to the ultrasound machine and monitor. Pulses of ultrasound are sent from the probe through the skin into your body. The ultrasound waves then echo ('bounce back') from the various structures in the body.

The echoes are detected by the probe and are sent down the wire to the ultrasound machine. They are displayed as a picture on the monitor. The picture is constantly updated so the scan can show movement as well as structure. For example,  the valves of a heart opening and closing during a scan of the heart. The operator moves the probe around over the skin surface to get views from different angles.

The scan is painless and takes about 15-45 minutes, depending on which parts of the body are being examined. A record of the results of the test can be made as still pictures or as a video recording.

What is an ultrasound test used for?
It is used in many situations. The way the ultrasound bounces back from different tissues can help to determine the size, shape and consistency of organs, structures and abnormalities. So, it can: Help to monitor the growth of an unborn child, and check for abnormalities. An ultrasound scan is routine for pregnant women. Detect abnormalities of heart structures such as the heart valves. (An ultrasound scan of the heart is called an echocardiogram.) Help to diagnose problems of the liver, gallbladder (such as gallstones), pancreas, thyroid gland, lymph nodes, ovaries, testes, kidneys, bladder and breast. For example, it can help to determine if an abnormal lump in one of these organs is a solid tumour or a fluid-filled cyst. Detect abnormal widening of blood vessels (aneurysms).

Some specialist ultrasound techniques
In some situations, a clearer picture can be obtained from a probe that is within the body. So a small probe, still attached by a wire to the ultrasound machine, can be: Swallowed into the gullet. This is sometimes used to get clearer images of the heart, which lies just in front of the gullet.Placed in the vagina or rectum to get clearer images of the pelvic and reproductive organs.Used during an operation to look deeper into structures to help guide a surgeon.
The above are not exhaustive lists, and ultrasound scanning has various other uses.
What should I do to prepare for the test?

Usually there is no special preparation needed. Continue to take your usual medication. You should eat and drink normally before and after the test unless otherwise instructed. For example:
  1. If certain parts of the abdomen are being examined, you may be asked to eat a low-fibre diet for a day or so before the test (to minimise 'gas' in your gut).
  2.  You may be asked not to eat for several hours before a scan of the abdomen.
  3.  For a scan of the lower bowel you may be given an enema to clear the bowel.
  4.  To scan the bladder or pelvis you may need to have a full bladder.
  5.  You will be told what you need to do before any particular scan.
Are there any side-effects or complications from ultrasound?
Ultrasound scans are painless and safe. Unlike X-rays and other imaging tests, ultrasound does not use radiation. It has has not been found to cause any problems or complications.
