Samsung Galaxy Prevail (Boost Mobile) is the latest technology of 2011

Samsung and Boost Mobile are hosting an event in Manhattan on April 5th, where the Android handset pictured above is likely to be announced. No further details were immediately available, including specs, branding, or information on pricing and release. However, Samsung does have quite a cache of unused product names filed with the USPTO, and of those, the Samsung Exhilarate seems like a good possibility to us.

By comparing the image to the current crop of Galaxy S variants, it appears that the screen here is too small to claim a four-inch diagonal. In fact, this phone looks pretty similar to Sprint's HVGA Samsung Transform QWERTY slider about the face, although we suspect that it lacks a physical keyboard. Even if it ends up being a low- to mid-range device a la the Galaxy Ace, though, it should prove to be an attractive addition to the current anemic smartphone lineup on Boost.

Specific info on the specifications list of the new Samsung Galaxy Prevail was not unveiled either, though rumor has it that this device might rung under Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. Moreover, it has been suggested that the mobile phone would include a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper on the back when released, and that it would also sport a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space.

 

We’re here live at the Boost Mobile’s media event in New York City where the prepaid carrier just announced the Samsung Galaxy Prevail — its first CDMA Android powered smartphone. The Galaxy Prevail runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) and sports a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 2 megapixel rear-facing camera, Bluetooth, and free subscription to Telenav for voice-guided turn-by-turn directions. During our initial hands-on, it was immediately clear that the Galaxy Prevail does not have the same hardware prowess as other Samsung devices with the Galaxy namesake. There’s no 4-inch Super AMOLED display, it’s incapable of recording 720p video, and it felt a bit sluggish navigating through menus and panning on web pages. That’s not necessarily a deal breaker, though, as the Galaxy Prevail is available for a very reasonable $179.99 contract-free. When used with Boost Mobile’s $50 all-you-can-eat smartphone plan — which includes unlimited talk, text, and web browsing — the deal gets even sweeter. It’s certainly a welcome addition to Boost’s portfolio, especially for those looking to save a few bucks without sacrificing all that a smartphone can offer, but certainly isn’t going to woo many (read: any) users away from their current Android handset.

As for the price tag it might feature, word on the street is that it could go for around $250, but confirmation on this still has to emerge. All in all, it appears that Samsung and Boost Mobile might soon bring a pretty appealing device to shelves, while making it available at an affordable price tag.

The Mazda CX-7 i Touring may look like a futuristic sports car, but it lacks the turbocharged engine and cabin tech options that make the Grand Touring trim level so appealing. If you've ever driven a Mazda , you probably already know the automaker has a knack for making small, nimble vehicles that are easy on the wallet as well as the amount of fuel they consume. Sometimes, though, you might only have to rely on feel. Take the 2011 Mazda CX-7. It just feels like a solid vehicle. Everything else then just seems to fall in line, well, that makes for a decent package.

 

At least in front, the Mazda CX-7 interior looks great; front seats are wide yet quite firm, and supportive for a wide range of sizes. The upright driving position affords a good view ahead, too. The story is less delightful in back. There's barely enough width to fit three across; adults will find plenty of headroom, but the low position leaves knees elevated and a general shortage of legroom. Cargo space is indeed limited, but folding the backseats forward yields 70 inches of flat cargo floor; the catch is that it's not very tall—the result of such a rakish design and a surprisingly high cargo floor—but enough to move a coffee table or love seat.

For 2011, you don't have to step up to the turbo engine in order to get the Touring trim, which gets you leather upholstery; there's a new 'i' Touring model. Top Grand Touring trims include automatic climate control, a SmartKey entry system, a moonroof, heated mirrors, the nav system, rain-sensing wipers, and xenon HID headlamps. All models but the base SV come with a Bluetooth hands-free interface—Bluetooth streaming audio is also offered—and for the first time, the top-of-the-line Grand Touring picks up a Blind Spot Monitoring System. For the upper trims, a top-notch Bose Centerpoint audio system is optional, as well as a touch-screen, voice-activated navigation system.

As a mid size vehicle, the CX-7 has four doors, has a front located engine, and is offered in four-wheel drive. As you can see, despite the smaller capacity, this 2.2′s output betters that of the current Ranger and its 2.5L rivals in Malaysia, except for the Navara.   A world wide web for robots? It sounds like a crazy idea but it could mean that once a task is learned any robot can find out how to do it just by asking RoboEarth.

Robots Get Their Very Own Internet

Guess who's getting their own internet? Robots! Robots are getting their own, robot-only internet, thanks to scientists who, according to the BBC, "hope it will allow robots to come into service... armed with a growing library of knowledge about their human masters." Why, hmm, yes, "armed," indeed.

"RoboEarth," as the project has been dubbed,

will be a communication system and a database, [researcher Dr. Markus Waibel] said. In the database will be maps of places that robots work, descriptions of objects they encounter and instructions for how to complete distinct actions.

European scientists have embarked on a project to let robots share and store what they discover about the world.Called RoboEarth it will be a place that robots can upload data to when they master a task, and ask for help in carrying out new ones.

RoboEarth is an Internet facility intended to make "life" easy for robots. You can think of it as the web for robots. Just as you look up something you want to know about on the web, a robot can do the same using RoboEarth, but in addition it will routinely upload data about what it is doing and where it is.

Researchers behind it hope it will allow robots to come into service more quickly, armed with a growing library of knowledge about their human masters.

If you are a fan of the Terminator movies or TV series you might well be thinking "SkyNet" and worrying about robots getting smart and taking over. This might be a worry for the future but at the moment RoboEarth is just a knowledge base and it doesn't have any central intelligence, artificial or otherwise.

RoboEarth will include everything needed to close the loop from robot to RoboEarth to robot. The RoboEarth World-Wide-Web style database will be implemented on a Server with Internet and Intranet functionality. It stores information required for object recognition (e.g., images, object models), navigation (e.g., maps, world models), tasks (e.g., action recipes, manipulation strategies) and hosts intelligent services (e.g., image annotation, offline learning).
